To my ears, the hardware is missing some of the high frequency "sparkle" that the software has. The PCM samples in the software sound clearer to me. IMO, Korg did a damn good job of creating a VST/AU version that replicates the hardware pretty nicely. I own both a Wavestation A/D, as well as the Korg Legacy Collection. No doubt about it, it sounds unique and fresh even today. The battery seems to go out regularly, but it's installed with a nice quick-release mount. Otherwise I can't see what else might go wrong with it. Much harder than the videos on YouTube make it out to be. I had to replace the LCD backlight when I got it - which in my case was a huge, huge pain in the ass. I think the VST has resonant filters while the hardware doesn't (correct me if I'm wrong)? However, I have done comparisons against the software version and to my ear they sound identical. I've only had the A/D for a short while so I haven't fully dived in yet. Plus the LCD is really big (as is the whole rack unit). It has the little vector stick and the full WaveStation interface which, I'm sure makes it much easier to program. It does the line-in vocoder stuff which I think is great. So is there any reason to get the SR?If I were you, I'd look at the A/D, rather than the SR. And the VST is obviously a lot easier to edit. Are there are upsides to owning the SR hardware unit? Everything I've read suggests the sound is the same or even better with the VST.
